Insider Tip - Give Yourself A Trim

Spring 2008 Ready-to-wear Emilio Pucci

Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen caused some waves this spring when she cut off her long hair and went for a shorn bob. She boldly states that she cut her hair herself, and had a friend help even out the back. I would not suggest cutting your hair by yourself, however I do think that it's possible to trim your own bangs. In fact it is a great way to save some time and money, instead of always frequenting the salon.

Right before New Year's I decided that I wanted shorter bangs. Since I am blessed with the inability to wait when I'm excited about an idea, I decided to take a stab at cutting my bangs myself. I didn't want to have to wait to make an appointment with a salon. In fact I was quite surprised at how easy it was to get a salon look.

  • Start out with dry hair. If you cut your bangs while wet, you will create a greater chance for error. The bangs will be much shorter when dry.

  • Choose the pieces that you would like to cut. Make sure to push back and pin up all the excess hair you will not be cutting.

  • Use a styling comb (the one with the fine teeth) and high quality hair scissors. Don't use any old pair of scissors that you may have laying around the house. They need to be sharp. Jimmy Paul, a hairstylist at Bumble and Bumble, suggests using manicure scissors in order to ensure the most precision.

  • Angle the scissors up and down at a 45 degree angle. Now slowly snip away at your ends. If you cut straight across your bangs will come out uneven. Work slowly taking only a little bit of hair with each snip.
