The Dark Side - Brunettes Making Their Way Down The Runway

Spring 2008 Ready-To-Wear Gucci Runway

Brunettes are in! It's official. Naturally I get very excited since I've been sporting dark hair my whole life and I have always thought brown hair was fun. It seems that people are slowly starting to convert. This season more and more brunettes are walking down the runway, especially in Europe.

We are well aware of the stereotypes, the dumb blonde, the mousy brunette and despite the fact that we know they are false, they still affect our psyche. Hairstylist Laurie Foley tells Vogue that she has noticed the subtle shift in desired haircolor. As I've stated in a previous blog, Hair That Makes A Statement, dark hair is seen as edgy. Dark hair is rebellious and sexy. Research has shown that people trust brunettes and believe that they are more responsible. For those reasons women tend to stick to darker tones in the professional world. Actresses who go dark, usually return to their lighter tone, on the other hand professionals stick with dark hair.

Another reason people are letting go of bleach is because of the damage it does to your hair. Laurie Foley, owner of the tiny east village salon L'Atelier de Laurie, works with blonde addicts who constantly request to cut of all their hair because of the excessive damage bleack wreaks on hair. The reasons bleach is so horrible for your hair is that it opens up the hair cuticle. Coloring hair a darker shade helps to shrink the cuticle and makes the hair look shinier and healthier. Instead of cutting large amounts of hair, Foley tries to convince blondes to color their hair and salvage what they can.
